7,058 Covid-19 cases recorded in Thailand on 8th July
On 7th July, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) stressed that the Land of Smiles may hit daily cases of 10,000 in the next two weeks, because of the dominant and fast-spreaking Delta variant.
Looks like the number of daily cases is inching closer to these quadruple digits – 7,058 new Covid-19 infections were reported on 8th July 2021 in Thailand.
The event has required the CCSA to consider a lockdown proposal. So, what’s going to happen next?

Record-number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand may pave way for a lockdown
On 8th July, the country saw 7,058 new Covid-19 cases, a record high for Thailand. 6,990 of these are from the general public, where 68 were found in prisons. Mr Natthapon Nakpanich, Secretary-General of National Security Council asserted that the CCSA would consider lockdown proposed by the Public Health Ministry to prevent the further spreading of Covid-19, according to Chiang Mai One.
If passed, the lockdown restrictions may be similar to last April’s regulations.

The proposal details different lockdown levels for various provinces. High-risk areas with large amount of cluster cases, like Bangkok, may see a full lockdown while regions with lower daily case numbers could go into a semi lockdown.
Bangkok’s cluster cases continue
After the Songkran holiday, a number of Covid-19 cluster cases arose from entertainment venues in Bangkok. These establishments are currently closed due to the fact that cases connected to the area were rising by 2,000 daily.
The current surge in Covid-19 cases is also connected to clusters in Bangkok. This time, however, they’re found in construction sites, factories and prisons became clustered areas due to overcrowding of people, reported by Bangkok Post.
Will Thai provinces go into lockdown?
Due to the surge of Covid-19 cases, Thailand may have to go into lockdown. Reports of a lockdown is forcing people to stock-up on at-home essentials beforehand in order to make their long-term staycation as comfortable as possible.
This will lead to another wave of panic buying – it already happened around in some of Bangkok’s department stores, where stocks are quickly depleting.
To avoid facing a herd of panic buyers and exposing yourself to the virus, you can opt for online shopping from these supermarkets.
What do you think? Would a lockdown be effective?
