On Thursday, 5th March 2020, Thai officials announced that a compulsory quarantine order will be in place for arrivals coming into Thailand from 6 high risk countries, including South Korea, Italy, and Hong Kong.
However, health authorities have now announced that the plan will no longer be implemented, though visitors and returnees from the listed countries are highly recommended to self-quarantine themselves for 14 days and stay indoors.
Bangkok Post reported that travellers also “risk punishment” if they do not report their whereabouts and health status to authorities for “monitoring”. It is unclear how the checks will be put in place.
No travel restrictions confirmed
This news follows a series of clashing announcements that left many confused as it was not confirmed whether Thailand would be imposing any travel restrictions or not.
However, visitors are generally advised to stay calm and abide by the current measures put into place, such as temperature screenings at all Thai international airports.
Health authorities have also confirmed the 48th case of COVID-19 in Thailand after a British man who arrived from Hong Kong tested positive for the virus.
