Do you ever think about where your used face masks end up after you throw them into the trash? Well, they end up in the hands of our unsung heroes; garbage collectors.
Facebook page 3WheelsUncle posted a photo of 2 Bangkok garbage collectors holding up signs in Thai and English that read: “We risk our lives for you, you separate wastes for us.”
The phrase is adapted from a popular message medical workers from all around the globe have been using during the COVID-19 pandemic, “I stay at work for you, you stay at home for us.”

The purpose of the picture is to remind us that we must deal with used face masks properly before throwing them away. This way, we can reduce the risk of garbage collectors coming into contact with the COVID-19 virus, as well as for general sanitary purposes.

Cartoonist Eva Comics made an effort to illustrate the proper ways to get rid of used face masks in a clear and cute infographic that everyone can easily follow.
However, amid the COVID-19 outbreak, we need to deal with our used face masks as if they’ve already been exposed to the virus, so we won’t unknowingly pass on any germs to other people. We can also use a clear plastic bag to put them in so garbage collectors can spot what’s inside and deal with them appropriately.
Thailand has also seen some unbelievable news about sellers putting recycled face masks on the market, which is gross and risky. To prevent this, we can cut our masks in half with scissors before following the mentioned method.

The best solution is to collect used face masks in a plastic bag and put them in biohazard waste bins that are located at any nearby hospital. If you’re not sure where this type of bin can be found, kindly ask the healthcare workers there – they’ll be more than happy to assist you.
While we’re taking the best care of ourselves in the middle of the pandemic, we must also look out for other folks as well – especially those who’re working hard to make our lives comfortable.
