Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday on 3rd June 2020 was Thailand’s first public holiday after the lockdown easing measures took place.

Around 5,000 vacationers, most of whom had driven there, decided to head to the newly reopened Bang Saen beach in Chonburi for a midweek holiday. This resulted in failed social distancing and heavy traffic jams.

Following the national lockdown being lifted, Bang Saen reopened on 1st June with a newly improved environment to aesthetically please visitors.

The ‘new normal’ measure was also implemented, which includes the ban on alcoholic beverages and social distancing rules being put in place.

By the afternoon, the road along Bang Saen beach was fully occupied by cars, unable to move. 3 of the 4 lanes were filled with parked vehicles, reported Bangkok Post.

After witnessing the heavy traffic on the beachfront road, Saen Suk municipal mayor Narongchai Kunplome decided to order temporary closure to control visitor numbers.

Besides the failed social distancing, piles of garbage, including food containers and beverage bottles, were left scattered on the revamped beach and pavement after the crowd left.

Sanook reported that the city staff had to work extra hard to clean the area before the morning came.

It is understandable that many people crave a holiday after a long lockdown, but don’t forget to look out for health and safety.
